Audition Requirements for Future Students
Undergraduate Audition Requirements 1. Solo Repertoire: Students should prepare at least one solo or two etudes for the audition. The work(s) should encompass a minimum of two contrasting styles of performance. Accompaniment is not required. The following compositions are examples of solo repertoire appropriate for the audition. However, solos or etudes of comparable difficulty are also acceptable. Please email if you have any questions regarding appropriate audition repertoire. Albinoni, T. – Concerto (any) Britten, B. – Six Metamorphoses after Ovid Cimarosa, D. - Concerto Handel, G. F. – Sonata or Concerto (any) Haydn, F. J. – Concerto in C Major Hindemith, P. - Sonate Hummel – Adagio and Variations Marcello, B. – Concerto Mozart, W. A. – Concerto in C Major or Quartet for Oboe and Strings Poulenc, F. - Sonate Schumann, R. - Three Romances Saint Saens, C. - Sonate Telemann, G. P. – Sonata in A Minor 2. Scales (required for all degree programs: Bachelor of Music (MPRF)(performance), Bachelor of Music Education (BMEI), Bachelor of Music Therapy (BMT), Bachelor of Science (BS), and Bachelor of Arts (BA): - Major and minor scales: All scales, articulated and slurred. Two octave minimum for Bb, B, C, Db, D, and Eb major. One octave minimum (or extended length) for all remaining keys. - Chromatic Scale: Ascending and descending from low C through high E 3. Sight Reading A short work will be selected for sight-reading at the audition. 4. Aural Skills Assessment Brief pitch matching exercises will be given at the audition. Auditions normally last about 20 to 30 minutes, including a short interview. Because openings and scholarships are limited, auditioning as early as possible is recommended. Graduate Audition Requirements 1. Scales and scale exercises: Representative technical studies demonstrating full range of the instrument and articulation facility (major/minor scales, thirds, sixths, etc.) 2. Solo Repertoire/Etudes: - One Ferling or Barrett etude - Two orchestral excerpts of contrasting styles - Two solo/concerto movements of contrasting styles 3. Sight Reading 4.
